Frequently Asked Questions

Compiled by Alexandra Hall, RDH

  1. What is emu oil?
For thousands of years emu oil has been a medicinal staple of Aboriginal Australians who use it for natural healing and pain control support. Emu oil is a highly penetrating source of Omega 3, 6 and 9 nutrients. Omega 3 and 6 are essential for rebuilding damaged cells and for producing new ones. Omega 9 is a natural inflammatory substance.
  2. Is emu oil oily?
Emu oil is a unique oil, that is rich and creamy.  At room temperature emu oil is more liquid, if refrigerated the oil solidifies. In appropriate amounts emu oil penetrates the skin deeply in a few minutes being completely absorbed and leaving no residue.   If too much emu oil is applied the skin will become saturated with the extra unabsorbed oil remaining on top of skin. Patrons are advised to experiment with a few drops at a time to determine their personal ideal emu  oil dose.
  3. What is emu oil used for?
Emu oil is used topically as an anti-aging beauty cream to reduce the appearance of fine facial lines and improve the overall appearance of the skin. It is also used to soothe chronic inflammatory skin conditions such as dermatitis, rosacea, eczema, and psoriasis. Emu oil nutritionally supports the healing of burns and injured skin and is reportedly helpful in inflammatory pain management, easing some forms of arthritis, tendinitis, fibromyalgia and neuritis.
  4. Where does emu oil come from?
Emu oil comes from the fat pad that surrounds the emu's thorax, which is rendered and then refined to yield the creamy emu oil. Emu are raised for their deliciously low-fat red meat, recognized by the American Heart Association as a healthy alternative to beef. Emu oil is derived from emu fat, a byproduct of emu meat processing. All Outback Medic products are made from emus raised in the USA, all products are formulated and bottled in the USA.
  5. Does emu oil have an odor?
Emu oil has a very mild natural scent similar to other food oils.
  6. Is emu oil FDA approved?
Emu oil has not yet been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration in the United States. At this time it is categorized as a cosmetic. Emu oil is listed by the Australian Therapeutic Goods Registry as both an active substance and an active ingredient.
  7. Does emu oil clog pores?
No. In its pure form emu oil is proven to be noncomedogenic (not pore clogging).
  8. Is emu oil hypoallergenic?
Yes. Pure emu oil has been determined to be hypoallergenic and thus safe for the most sensitive skin types.  There is a possibility that those allergic to fowl maybe allergic to emu oil altough no research has confirmed this.
  9. How much emu oil do I use?
Rule of thumb is to apply pure emu oil in quantities that are absorbed by the skin in 2 minutes. Patrons marvel at how little of the product is needed to achieve the desired effect.
  10. Does pure emu oil need to be refrigerated?
Outback Medic Survival Gear for Skin® emu oil is ultra-refined to last a year without refrigeration. Since light and air degrade natural products, it is best to keep the products tightly closed and out of direct sunlight when not in use.
  11. Do doctors recommend emu oil?
Yes, some do! Doctors are learning from their patients that using this unique oil gives results that standard medicines do not. Dermatologists are recommending emu oil to help support the healing of burns, chemical peels, eczema, rosacea and psoriasis. Medical and veterinary doctors are recommending emu oil to support wound healing and to reduce granulation tissue that causes the appearance of scars from incisions. Radiation oncologists are discovering that emu oil is highly preferred by patients who suffer from radiation therapy burns. Emu oil penetrates the skin to support healing at the lower levels with no sticky residue. Pain specialists, rheumatologists, chiropractors and massage therapists are incorporating emu oil into their practices as a topical, drug-free alternative for inflammatory muscle and joint pain.

Face, Hands and Feet

My husband has been using emu oil on his chapped landscaper hands. He has been rubbing the excess across his forehead and it even diminished the lines on his face! Emu oil is great because it is non-greasy, non-oily and it penetrates almost instantly! I use it for my dry diabetic hands and feet. We love it!
